Struggles #2

These photographs remind me of what I don’t see when I encounter others.   Behind the store clerk’s smile is an empty refrigerator she’s worried about filling.  The postman’s animated wave is hiding pain over a drug-addicted child.  Behind the contractor’s fights with his co-workers is a fifth of bourbon he uses to drown out his loneliness and despair.  Behind many people’s laughter  is pain.  Many of us struggle and don’t want anyone to know it.  Most don’t know where to go or who to trust.

As I look deeply into these faces, I feel inadequate to help.  I say to myself:  “The very least I could do is be kind” to the clerk, postman, and construction work.  It’s a simple thought, a simple task, but one that gets lost during our every day life.

“3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”   (Philippians 2:3-4)

I thank God for reminding me to watch my manners.
